A Very Present Help in Time of Need: 11 Psalms for an Anxious Heart

It’s the end of August. Summer is ending and fall is coming. I always love when fall comes and we can start to feel the cooler temperatures and see the leaves change. Have you noticed any signs of fall where you’re at? It’s starting to get a little cooler here, but I’m looking forward to when fall really starts.

As we’re transitioning between the end of one season and the start of another, I can tell God is pulling me toward seeking Him. Matthew 6:33 has been a bit of an ongoing theme for me over the last few years. “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

We don’t need to keep our eyes on anything else. Our identity isn’t found in anything else. And so in light of that, we should know the God in whom we find ourselves. One aspect of God’s character that He’s been showing me is that He is our Comforter.

Jesus came to bring peace between us and God and to bring peace to us on this side of heaven as well. He cares about us.

I have anxiety. It’s something I’ve dealt with as long as I can remember and so I’ve gathered a few Bible verses over the years that help me when my anxiety is getting the better of me. One book that I always seem to end up in when I need some comfort, whether intentionally or otherwise, is the book of Psalms. The psalms are full of God’s comfort. He sees us as His friends, His children. He cares about our peace. These are some of my favorite verses to remind me how much God cares, how much He wants to offer us comfort in our trials.

“I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living! Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!” Psalm 27:13-14

“Because He inclined His ear to me, therefore I will call on Him as long as I live.” Psalm 116:2

“I waited patiently for the Lord; He inclined to me and heard my cry.” Psalm 40:1

“Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise Him, my salvation and my God.” Psalm 42:11

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1

Very present. Not distracted. Not needing to be caught up. Very present. Always there. Always aware. Always focused on us.

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10

Be still. Rest. Don’t worry. He’s God. He will be exalted among the nations and in the earth. He’s greater than anything we could ever face. Let Him take care of it. Let Him take care of you.

“Behold, God is my helper; the Lord is the upholder of my life.” Psalm 54:4

“When I am afraid, I put my trust in You.” Psalm 56:1

“You have kept count of my tossings; put my tears in Your bottle. Are they not in Your book?” Psalm 56:8 –  This verse is a sign of how much He loves us, how much He treasures us. You wouldn’t keep something unless you cared about it. You wouldn’t keep count or collect it or write it down if you didn’t care about it.

“I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills His purpose for me.” Psalm 57:2 – He will not forget you. You’re not unseen by God even if you feel unseen by others.

“When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the Rock that is higher than I.” Psalm 61:2

These verses speak of a God who loves me, who cares for me, who’s listening to me, even if I’m struggling to put into words what I’m feeling. Those moments when you feel so out of control and you don’t know what to do, He does. He’s still in control. Perfectly. He isn’t thrown off by us. He doesn’t have to readjust His plans. He’s in control. And He’s good. Let that be a comfort to you.

He listens. He cares. He comforts.
