Back to Basics: Finding Refreshment in the Middle of Burnout and Overwhelm

Back to Basics

Hey, guys. Welcome to the end of October. It’s hard to believe there are only a few months left in this year already. It feels like it’s flown by. And I want to ask, is anyone else tired?

It’s so easy to get caught up with life. To get overwhelmed by everything going on and start to burn out. Then to let that burnout go on because life is still going on right? It’s not stopping just because we’re tired or have things we’re concerned about.

That’s about where I’m at. That’s where a lot of people I know are at right about now. I know personally, I haven’t been very good at keeping up with God this month either. I’ve been letting that time with Him slide because I’m tired or overwhelmed when I go to sit with Him and I can feel that lack.

So this month I feel like I’ve been needing to be reminded of the basics about my God.

He’s God alone.

Remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me.

Isaiah 46:9

He provides.

Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds!

Luke 12:24

He listens to my prayers.

I love the Lord, because He has heard my voice and my pleas for mercy. Because He inclined His ear to me, therefore I will call on Him as long as I live.

Psalm 116:1-2

He’s concerned about the things I’m concerned about.

Cast all your anxieties on Him, because He cares for you.

1 Peter 5:7

He sees me.

Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in Your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.

Psalm 139:16

He loves me.

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.

Jeremiah 29:11

How are you feeling this month? Are you also feeling tired or overwhelmed or a little burnt out? Maybe a lot burnt out?

Who among you fears the Lord and obeys the voice of His servant? Let him who walks in darkness and has no light trust in the name of the Lord and rely on His God.

Isaiah 50:10

Let me encourage you to let go a little bit. Slow down. Give God your current best, even when that best is just sitting with Him telling Him you’re so stressed you can’t read your Bible. Or telling Him you’re too tired to focus. He’s not upset with you.

Take your time to rest when you need it. He created you with a need for rest. Look at Elijah’s story in 1 Kings 19. God gave him the rest he needed. He told him not to go on his journey yet because he needed rest. He needed to recoup. Just stay close to Him while you’re tired and trust Him to be the God He says He is.

He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for His name's sake.

Psalm 23:3
